nature tourism becomes a mainstay tourist destination in Leuser because it has
the attraction of rare wild semi-orangutan orangutans and a panoramic view of
tropical rainforests. Bukit Lawang or better known as the Sumatra Orangutan
observation center has an area of 200 ha, located in the Bukit Lawang
Plantation Village, Bahorok District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province.
Formerly Bukit Lawang was a benign Orangutan rehabilitation center to be
released back to nature. The history of the existence of the Orangutan
Rehabilitation Center in Bukit Lawang originated from a program run by the WWF
and the Frankfurd Zoological Society in 1973.
At that
time, as a pioneer, Regina Frey and Monica Borner, the conditions and situation
of Bukit Lawang were suitable to be used as the Orangutan Rehabilitation
Center.
Initially the Rehabilitation Center was only visited by researchers and
conservationists. In its later development, this area developed into the
Sumatran Orangutan Observation Center (Viewing Center) and became one of the
mainstay attractions in North Sumatra, which was visited by domestic and
foreign tourists. Recorded from 1972 to 2001.
Bukit Lawang was a place for
orangutan rehabilitation. During this time, 229 ex-captive orangutans
confiscated from the animal trade have been rehabilitated at this location.
Bukit Lawang is now recognized as the best gateway to enjoy the enchanting
beauty of Mount Leuser National Park.
Although it is no longer a place for
rehabilitation and release of Orangutans, the forests around the Bukit Lawang
area still leave opportunities for tourism activities and observations of the

Bukit Lawang
is the main gate to enjoy the beauty of Leuser. To reach Bukit Lawang, it can
be reached by road trip from the city of Medan (the capital of North Sumatra
Province) through the city of Binjai by public transport through the Pinang
Baris Medan bus terminal or private vehicle with a travel time of around 2.5
hours with a distance of about 80 km. The condition of the road to the Bukit
Lawang area is very good and has been paved. For tourist facilities, there are
Natural
tourist lodges with rates varying between Rp. 100,000 to Rp. 500,000 per night.
Other available tourist facilities include restaurants / restaurants, camping
ground areas, viewing centers, information corners, visitor centers, terminals,
regional gates, trail / trail, information boards, feeding sites and ferry
boats to the Gunung Leuser National Park area.
This area has become a tourist
destination for tropical rainforests which is quite well known in foreign

type of lowland and wavy ecosystem.
In Bukit
Lawang there can be found several types of plants and animals such as semar
bags, meranti, keruing, sea resin, forest orchids, rafflessia, carrion flowers,
tiger fungus, various butterflies, orangutans, gibbons, rice, sun bears, forest
goats and others which is typical of tropical rain forests.
The
livelihoods of the people in Bukit Lawang are generally farmers and traders.
The culture in Bukit Lawang is heterogeneous, there is nothing dominant between
the Malay, Karo, Javanese and Batak tribes.
Beautiful
natural scenery with clear rivers and the presence of Sumatran Orangutans are
the main attraction for visitors.
